I felt disappointed by a clergy member when he learned my assault was by a priest. I thought he was a friend but all he wanted to do was protect his church. What it forced me to do is realize that my relationship with God and Jesus was completely personal and independent of any church.

I cried. I found a support group. I read about things in a book and also through people’s stories in magazines. The whole world opened from the support group.

I read spiritual books. I talked to friends. Journaling helped me connect with myself and improved my connection with others. I also practiced self-care including eating good food and practicing good hygiene. I walked a lot.

I figured out the safest person to talk to, to share, and be connected. I find it is really important to share what is happening for me with another human being.
